Hugo (Martin Scorsese, 2011)
I love Scorsese, but I did not expect much from this movie. I don’t like 3D, I don’t generally like kid movies, blah blah blah.
Wrong.
This is a movie everyone can/should enjoy. I saw it with an audience of very young and very old and every one of them was completely entranced by it.
This is why people go to movies. The 3D completely makes sense. You’ll know what I mean after you see the movie. It isn’t a gimmick; it assists the story. And speaking of story, this movie has a great one. I found myself getting way more emotional than I expected during several scenes of this movie.
The acting is flawless (even Sacha Baron Cohen manages to give a brilliant, surprisingly complex acting performance), the story is perfect, the visuals are jaw-dropping.
So yeah, as crazy as it sounds, the director of Goodfellas just made a 3D movie about kids and and a key and a robot and old movies and clocks and Ben Kingsley and the guy who played Borat; and it’s easily one of the best films of the year.
Go see this. In a theater. In 3D. You won’t be disappointed.
